Three steps from picture to DXF
Add your picture
Choose a photo or a PNG or JPG image. A photo is first turned into a clean black line drawing, because a DXF holds lines, not colours or shading. A simple picture with clear shapes works best.
Make the line art
Pick a style and a detail level, then press the button. Fewer lines give a file that is easier to work with. Remove the background if you only want the main subject.
Save the DXF and set the width
Type the width you want in millimetres and press DXF. Every outline in the file is closed and the units are millimetres. Open it in your design or cutting software and check it before you use it.
PNG to DXF: what you get and what to check
This page turns a picture into a line drawing first and then into a DXF, using the image to line art tool on the home page. The DXF is a clean vector tracing of the drawing: a set of closed outlines in millimetres, with gaps closed and tiny fragments removed before export, which suits laser, Cricut and CNC projects.
A photo has far more detail than a cutter or engraver can follow, so the clean-up smooths away the very smallest details; the Detail–Clean slider lets you keep more of them. The file is a good starting point, but we have not tested every machine: open it in your own software and test on scrap material first.
Choosing a picture for PNG to DXF
Pictures with a clear main shape and plain background give the cleanest outlines. Faces, fur and busy backgrounds turn into many small shapes. If the file has too many pieces, run the picture again with Low detail or remove the background.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cut the DXF straight away?
Check it first. The DXF is cleaned before export (tiny pieces removed, every outline closed), which is what cutters need, but we have not tested it on every machine or cutting software. Test on scrap.
What units does the DXF use?
Millimetres. You choose the width before saving, and the height follows the picture.
